Scarpa Mosaic – Wide Joint
Scarpa Mosaic: The Original Wide Joint
The Original Wide Joint format is the definitive translation of Carlo Scarpa’s masterful 1957 Negozio Olivetti floor, which mimics the layout of the Olivetti company's typewriters. In this specific configuration, the mosaic moves beyond traditional surface cladding; it operates as a profound exploration of raw materiality, negative space, and architectural rhythm.
Comprising a field of individual stone tesserae with authentically irregular, artisan-cut edges, the design relies entirely on its substantial grout channels. This intentional spacing elevates the grout from a functional necessity to a critical structural element. By providing a generous frame of negative space around each tessera, the wide joint isolates and magnifies the unique geological movement of the chosen marble or travertine. It demands a highly considered approach to specification, where the colour of the grout becomes the final, transformative detail that locks the geometric pattern into the overarching narrative of the room.
Bespoke Finishing & Application
To ensure total control over the spatial atmosphere, the Wide Joint format is engineered for two distinct installation pathways, allowing for a highly customisable visual identity:
-
Hand-Trowelled: Grouted with restraint to follow the undulating edges of the stone. This highlights the tactile, historically rustic nature of the individual tesserae, creating an immersive, sensory surface perfect for feature walls and bathroom sanctuaries.
-
Machine-Honed (Terrazzo Finish): The mosaic is overfilled with grout and mechanically honed in situ. This creates a perfectly flat, monolithic surface that feels incredibly sleek and architecturally disciplined—the ultimate specification for high-end residential and commercial floors.
The Curated Stone Archive
The Original Wide Joint is held across a meticulously curated archive of 12 premium natural stones, or nearly any stone via a custom configuration allowing for immediate architectural integration:
The Structural Greys & Blacks
-
Bardiglio: A sophisticated, moody grey marble. Its deep charcoal base is swept with fine, luminous veining, offering a balanced, architectural alternative to pure black.
-
Charred (Brusciato): A powerful, assertive stone with a deep, almost-black appearance. It provides dramatic, highly textured contrast when paired with a stark white grout.
The Heritage Neutrals
-
Calacatta: The pinnacle of Italian luxury. A luminous white ground struck through with warm gold and taupe veining, beautifully framed by the generous grout lines.
-
Carrara: The quintessential standard of classical architecture. Its soft white base and delicate, feathery grey tones provide a crisp, refined aesthetic.
-
Superwhite: Premium dolomite characterised by dynamic, cloudy grey and white movement. Each tessera acts as a unique snapshot of the stone's profound geological energy.
The Earth & Botanical Tones
-
Bruno: A warm, grounding brown stone. Its rich earthen base is layered with subtle tonal variations, bringing a quiet, historical depth to the ground plane.
-
Ivory Travertino: Channelling the earthen warmth of Roman antiquity, this selection highlights the natural, porous texture and creamy, sun-bleached shifts of classic travertine.
-
Rosa: A gentle, nuanced blush marble. Its soft pink and earthen tones offer a delicate warmth that beautifully offsets sharp, contemporary lines of steel or glass.
-
Mint: A soft, restorative green marble. Its cool hues and subtle white veining introduce a serene, botanical calm to the rigid geometric grid.
The Bold & Brecciated
-
Rosso Travertino: A character-filled statement. The vibrant, oxidised reds and raw texture of this travertine bring an immediate, tactile energy to a space.
-
Sangue: A dramatic, opulent burgundy marble. Its intense, deep red depths and intricate white veining create an uncompromising architectural feature.
-
Viola: The iconic Calacatta Viola. Striking splashes of deep violet and burgundy intersect a crisp white ground, turning every individual piece into a miniature abstract canvas.

Michael’s Note: "This is the stone that defines our atelier. If you are specifying the Wide Joint for a floor, I cannot overstate the impact of the Machine-Honed finish. Pouring a contrasting grout over the Viola or the Rosso Travertino and grinding it completely flat creates a monolithic, custom terrazzo floor that is entirely unique to your project. It is an investment in absolute architectural permanence."
