IFTAR Restaurant
Design approach
Project Case Study: IFTAR Restaurant
The IFTAR Restaurant is a profound exploration of earthen materiality and spatial flow. Designed by the acclaimed studio Killing Matt Woods and executed by Regera Group, the project moves away from traditional hospitality tropes to establish a deeply grounded, immersive architectural envelope inspired by Middle Eastern topographies.
The success of the design lies in its rigorous commitment to texture and volume. Rather than relying on applied decoration, the space utilises the raw, authentic character of natural stone to dictate the atmosphere. Warm, subdued lighting interacts beautifully with flowing architectural lines and heavily textured surfaces, creating a sanctuary that feels both ancient and highly contemporary.
Central to this narrative is the application of the Scarpa XL Mosaic, serving as a monumental focal point that anchors the restaurant’s interior.
The Material Application
To achieve the project’s complex, earth-toned aesthetic, the design team specified the Scarpa XL Mosaic in a bespoke, high-contrast blend:
-
Beige Marble & Rosso Travertine: This combination provides an immediate sense of historical gravity and organic warmth. The disciplined geometry of the Scarpa cut interacts dynamically with the porous, rustic nature of the Rosso Travertine and the soft, neutral base of the Beige Marble. The resulting surface introduces a profound, tactile rhythm that grounds the space and seamlessly integrates with the surrounding architectural curves.

Michael’s Note: “The application of the Scarpa XL in the IFTAR project is a masterclass in using geometric stone to soften a space. By wrapping the mosaic across the flowing, curved architectural elements, Killing Matt Woods has completely transformed a rigid material into something that feels fluid and monolithic. The deep reds of the Rosso Travertine add an essential layer of oxidised warmth that makes the entire room feel incredibly inviting.”
